Get Ready to Move Closer to the Sun

On 3rd or 4th January of each year, the Earth tends to move closest to the sun.

Since the earth does not orbit the sun in a perfect circle, it sometimes moves closer or away from the sun.

Its orbital movement around the sun is an ellipse.

Earth’s closet approach to the sun always occurs once a year.

Astronomers have earlier discovered that the earth will move closer to the sun today, being January 4th, 2022.

This closest distance between the earth and the sun is often referred to as Perihelion.

Perihelion is two different Greek words used to denote this movement. Peri stands for ‘near’, while helios stands for ‘sun’.

This astronomical event has continued to repeat itself in the early January of each year. Today’s event has already happened at 6:52 UTC (12:52 a.m. CST).

During this event, we moved 3% closer to the sun. The average distance between the earth and the sun is about 93 million miles (150 million km).

However, during perihelion, this distance was reduced to about 91 million miles (147 million km). This astronomical event is will provide the earth with more energy from the sun.

In fact, the sun’s intensity usually increases by 7% during perihelion.

When we become more technologically advanced, we can convert this unique energy to power our futuristic technologies.
